THE ABE CASH CONTEST $100

To promote the use of humor and creativity in English we will conduct a contest every six months in which English language students with at least four years of education in English will submit in English short stories or videos to abeonelinenglish.com. These items must demonstrate your ability to be funny in English. There is no age limit. The only requirement is that you must now be enrolled in an English language program at a school and not be a native English speaker. The English short story can’t be longer than 300 and not less than 150 words and if you choose a video it can't be longer than 3 minutes or shorter than one minute. The first contest opens on March 1 2010 and it closes on May 1 2010. You may submit your materials during these 2 months. The winner will be announced here on this page on May 20 2010. Your submission has to be an original work and it has to be written or filmed sometime between February 1 2010 and May 1 2010. Also please no materials that have been posted on the internet before May 1 2010. For the winning entry you will be paid $100 through your's or a close friend’s internet PAYPAL account. PAYPAL is free and can be downloaded on the internet. In order to verify your submission as original we ask you on the form to state the name of your school and your current English teachers name, phone number and email address. Here is an example of fun in English- In my hometown of Beijing I went to a KFC restaurant and decided to order my food in English not in my native language of Chinese. I first asked for a waiter who spoke English. Bob Lee was the name of my waiter. I asked for shark fin soup in English. Bob said “yes its delicious at this restaurant.” When Bob returned he said“Here is your shark skin soup.” I thought quickly- it's the wrong order -I hate shark skin soup. Bob looked at my face and said with a big smile” we are both learning English so I thought you might think I misunderstood you. I 'AM JUST JOKING. ITS REALLY SHARK FIN SOUP NOT SHARK SKIN SOUP. Your pronunciation is very good” I said . “ Bob your listening is very good” . We laughed together. How did Bob know I hated shark skin soup-it's a mystery to me. Now I will never forget the two words fin and skin. Does anybody know the recipe for thin fin shark soup?

If you win then you agree to the rules outlined above and below and you also agree to submit your photo which will be posted here with your entry. If you don't cooperate in the verification process you will be eliminated and the second place winner will be named the winner of the $100. Also by entering this contest you agree to allow ABE the exclusive use of your submission for one year. If later you violate the contest rules we will ask you to return the prize money to us through PAYPAL.

For the contest to be held we require at least a hundred different student entries. If less than than a 100 entries are received the contest will be extended until we reach a hundred entries. Only one entry per student or student group. Return to this page for any new deadlines if you don't see a winner here on May 20. We will also send an email to the winner.

Entries which are the work of more than one person are also encouraged- you and your school friends, you and your teacher for example. If it's the work of a group of students please only list the information for the group leader. We hope that the group leader will share the $100 among all the students who actively contributed to the entry.
